Striped foliage with colorful fall plumes
Zebra Grass brings a distinctive pattern to the landscape with unique horizontal bands of yellowish cream across green, arching leaves. Its tall, upright form adds structure and movement, making it useful as a specimen, seasonal screen, or backdrop in a sunny border.
In fall, creamy white plumes rise above the foliage and mature to a pinkish red, providing color and texture late in the season. The dried foliage and flower heads can remain standing through winter for continued interest.
Planting & Care
1. Planting: Plant or repot within 4 weeks of arrival. Choose a location with full sun and moist, well-drained soil. Allow enough room for the plant to develop its broad, clumping form.
2. Watering: Water deeply and regularly during the first growing season. Once established, water during extended dry periods, keeping the soil moderately moist but not soggy.
3. Pruning: Leave the dried foliage standing over winter if desired. Cut the entire clump back to 6–12 inches above the ground in late winter or early spring before new growth begins.
4. Fertilizing: Apply compost or a light dose of balanced, slow-release fertilizer in spring. Avoid excessive fertilizer, which can cause weak, floppy growth.
