Golden winter color with year-round structure
Wintergold white fir brings changing color and a tidy, pyramidal shape to the landscape. Its soft needles emerge chartreuse in spring, fading to green in summer, then changing to golden yellow in fall through winter.
This slow-growing evergreen works well as a specimen, in a conifer border, or as a year-round accent near an entry. It performs best in sunny locations with well-drained, slightly acidic soil and adds dependable structure without demanding frequent pruning. Native to the western United States, it grows best in regions with short, mild summers and long, cold winters.
Planting & Care
1. Planting: Plant or repot within 4 weeks of arrival. Remove the stake and ties at planting, as these are only for shipping. Choose a site with full sun and moist, well-drained, slightly acidic soil. Avoid planting in heavy clay soils. Dig a hole as deep as the root ball and about twice as wide, keeping the root flare level with the surrounding ground. Spread a 3” layer of mulch three feet around the tree, pulling the mulch back several inches from the trunk.
2. Watering: Water deeply after planting and regularly during the first growing season. Once established, water during extended dry periods, allowing the soil surface to dry slightly between waterings. Avoid soggy conditions.
3. Pruning: Little pruning is needed. Remove dead, damaged, or crossing branches in late winter or early spring, and preserve the central leader to maintain the tree’s natural form.
4. Fertilizing: Apply a balanced, slow-release evergreen fertilizer in early spring if growth is weak or soil is poor. Avoid heavy feeding, which can encourage soft, less resilient growth.
