Reliable harvests of high-quality, easy-shelling nuts
Western Schley is the most popular type of pecan for the Southwest because of its adaptability to the dry climate, low chill requirement, ability to bear sooner than other pecans, and its generous crops of high quality nuts. With thin shells that are easy to peel, its rich-tasting kernels are excellent for fresh eating, baking, and storing, making it a practical choice for anyone interested in a dependable home harvest. Grafted to an Elliot rootstock, pecans bear within 5–10 years.
A broad canopy of attractive green foliage provides welcome summer shade and gives larger yards an established, inviting look. Plant it in a sunny, open location with room to mature; for the best nut production, grow a type 2 pecan variety nearby for cross-pollination. Though a favorite of Western growers, this variety is highly susceptible to scab in humid eastern climates and should be avoided in these regions.
Planting & Care
1. Planting: Plant or repot within 4 weeks of arrival. Remove the stake and ties at planting, as these are only for shipping. Choose a site with full sun, deep, well-drained soil, and ample space away from buildings and utility lines. Dig a hole as deep as the root ball and two to three times as wide, keeping the root flare at or slightly above ground level.
2. Watering: Water deeply after planting and regularly during the first two years, allowing the soil surface to dry slightly between waterings. Established trees need consistent moisture during hot weather and while nuts are developing, but avoid waterlogged soil.
3. Pruning: Prune in late winter while the tree is dormant. Train young trees to one strong central leader, and remove dead, damaged, crossing, or crowded branches. Mature trees generally need only light corrective pruning.
4. Fertilizing: Apply a balanced, slow-release fertilizer in early spring once the tree is established. Pecans may also benefit from zinc, particularly where local soils are deficient. Follow a soil test when possible and avoid excessive nitrogen, which can promote weak growth.
