Large, juicy fruit with dependable yearly harvests

Vkusnyi Pomegranate Shrub produces large fruit filled with dark red, juicy arils. It begins bearing while young and crops steadily each year, making it a rewarding choice for edible gardens, sunny borders, or as a productive landscape focal point. Though the arils are slightly smaller than those of some other varieties, their balanced sweet-tart flavor and high juice content make them ideal for juicing, garnishing, or enjoying fresh.

This selection comes from the USDA germplasm collection and demonstrated disease tolerance in UF/IFAS humid-climate trials. Its reliable production and adaptability to warm, humid conditions make it especially useful in regions where some pomegranate varieties may struggle. As a Russian variety with cold hardiness to USDA Zone 6, it can also thrive in regions with colder winters.

Pollination Info

Vkusnyi Pomegranate Shrub Pollination

Vkusnyi Pomegranate Shrubs are self-fertile. You will get fruit with only one plant. However, adding an additional Vkusnyi Pomegranate Shrub will drastically increase the size of your crop.

Planting & Care

1. Planting: Plant or repot within 4 weeks of arrival. Remove the stake and ties at planting, as these are only for shipping. Choose a site with full sun and well-drained soil. Pomegranates are adaptable to a variety of soil types and can tolerate alkaline conditions. Dig a hole twice as wide as the root ball but no deeper, then backfill and water thoroughly.

2. Watering: Water deeply and regularly during the first growing season. Once established, pomegranates tolerate short dry periods, but consistent moisture during flowering and fruit development supports better harvests. Avoid waterlogged soil.

3. Pruning: Prune lightly in late winter to remove dead, damaged, or crossing branches. Pomegranates naturally grow as large shrubs but can also be trained into tree form. Remove basal suckers if maintaining a single-trunk tree, or allow several strong stems for a shrub-like form. Avoid heavy pruning, which can reduce fruit production.

4. Fertilizing: Apply a balanced, slow-release fertilizer, such as 8-8-8, in early spring according to label directions. Once established, a light application of nitrogen can be applied in spring to support healthy growth.
