Planting & Care
1. Planting: Sugar maples grow best in well-drained, moist, fertile soils with a slightly acidic pH. Select a spot where the tree receives full to partial sun (4–8 hours of sunlight per day). Dig a hole 2–3 times wider than the root ball and the same depth. Place the tree in the planting hole with the top of the root ball level with the surrounding soil. Backfill with soil, watering as you fill to eliminate air pockets. Finish backfilling, water thoroughly, then apply mulch around the base to help retain moisture and suppress weeds, keeping mulch a few inches away from the trunk.
2. Watering: During its formative years, water weekly. As the tree matures, continue to provide deep watering during the summer months, especially in dry conditions. Sugar maples are not drought tolerant and can develop leaf scorch in hot, dry weather.
3. Fertilizing: Sugar maples generally do not require fertilizer during their first year, though an organic root-support fertilizer may be used. In subsequent years, fertilize in spring with a 10-10-10 fertilizer. As trees mature, fertilization is usually unnecessary unless recommended by a soil test.
4. Pruning: Prune maple trees during winter or early spring before bud break, when they are fully dormant. This helps minimize stress on the tree and reduces the risk of disease transmission. Maples can bleed sap heavily if pruned during the growing season (spring and summer). Remove dead or broken branches first. Next, thin out the canopy to allow for better light and air circulation.
