A compact canopy for narrow urban spaces

This upright tree develops a broad, columnar form that fits neatly into smaller yards and constrained landscapes. Rich green foliage provides welcome shade through summer before turning yellow in fall, while delicate spring flowers add seasonal interest without overwhelming the space.

It is a practical choice for street tree use under utility lines or as a small shade tree. Tolerant of high-pH soils, heat, drought, and air pollution once established, it performs well in challenging urban settings and withstands severe pruning when size control is needed.

Planting & Care

1. Planting: Plant or repot within 4 weeks of arrival. Remove the stake and ties at planting, as these are only for shipping. Choose a site in full sun with well-draining soil. Dig a hole as deep as the root ball and about twice as wide, keeping the root flare level with the surrounding ground.

2. Watering: Water deeply after planting and regularly during the first growing season. Once established, it tolerates periods of drought, though occasional deep watering during prolonged heat supports healthy foliage and growth.

3. Pruning: Prune lightly to remove damaged, crossing, or crowded branches and to maintain its columnar shape. Pruning after flowering or during dry summer weather is ideal. Although it withstands severe pruning, routine light trimming is preferable.

4. Fertilizing: Apply a balanced, slow-release fertilizer in early spring if growth is weak or a soil test indicates a need. Avoid excessive fertilizer, which can encourage soft, overly vigorous growth.
