Ornamental foliage with sweet late-season fruit

Developed by the University of Florida, Southern Home Black Muscadine Vine stands out for its deeply lobed, ornamental leaves. Its vigorous growth creates an attractive showpiece on a sturdy arbor, trellis, or fence while adding shade and texture to the landscape.

Sweet black muscadine grapes ripen from late summer into fall. This self-fertile vine produces fruit without a second variety and is well adapted to areas with hot, humid summers and low winter chill. Southern Home muscadines can be enjoyed fresh or used to make jams, jellies, pies, and wine.

Pollination Info

Southern Home Black Muscadine Vine Pollination

Southern Home Black Muscadine Vines are self-fertile. You will get fruit with only one plant. However, adding an additional Southern Home Black Muscadine Vine will drastically increase the size of your crop.

Planting & Care

1. Planting: Plant or repot within 4 weeks of arrival. Choose a location with full sun, well-drained soil, and a strong trellis or fence for support. Space vines 10–15 feet apart and plant at the same depth they were growing in the container. Spread mulch around the planting area, keeping it away from the trunk, and keep the area free of weeds during establishment.

2. Watering: Water deeply after planting and regularly during the first growing season. Once established, provide about 1 inch of water weekly during dry periods, especially while fruit is developing. Avoid persistently soggy soil.

3. Pruning: Prune in late winter while the vine is dormant. Shorten the previous season’s side shoots to two to four buds and remove weak, crowded or damaged growth. Annual pruning supports airflow and reliable fruit production.

4. Fertilizing: Plant or repot within 4 weeks of arrival. Choose a location with full sun, well-drained soil, and a strong trellis or fence for support. Space vines 10–15 feet apart and plant at the same depth they were growing in the container. Spread mulch around the planting area, keeping it away from the trunk, and keep the area free of weeds during establishment.
