A striking addition to your urban landscape

The Saturnalia™ hybrid oak combines the best features of the Eastern red oak with the Southwestern silverleaf oak, making it an ideal choice for gardens across the country. This deciduous shade tree boasts vigorous, upright growth and a strong leader, ensuring it stands tall in urban landscapes with limited space. Red blushed leaves emerge in spring, then turn a glossy, deep green through summer, before finally changing to a bronzy-rusty red come autumn.

The Saturnalia™ tree’s name pays homage to both its winter red petiole and veins and the rich cultural heritage of the Chiricahua Mountain Apache natives. Hardy to cold zone 5b, this hybrid oak has also proven adaptable to the humidity of the Southeast. Perfect for modern urban forests, this tree combines visual appeal with a strong environmental presence, making it a worthy addition to your home or community space.

Planting & Care

1. Planting: Plant or repot within 4 weeks of arrival. Remove the stake and ties at planting, as these are only for shipping. Choose a spot with ample sunlight and well-drained soil for best results. Dig a hole that is twice as wide as the root ball but no deeper than the root ball itself. Place the tree in the hole, backfill with soil, and spread a 3” layer of mulch three feet around the tree. Water thoroughly.

2. Watering: Water regularly during the first few years to establish a strong root system. Once established, the tree is moderately drought-tolerant but will benefit from supplemental watering during prolonged dry spells.

3. Pruning: Prune in late winter or early spring before new growth begins to remove any dead or crossing branches. Light shaping can also enhance its growth habit and overall appearance.

4. Fertilizing: Apply a balanced, slow-release fertilizer in early spring to promote healthy growth during the growing season. Be careful not to over-fertilize, as this can damage roots.
