Salmon-red berries and woodland character
Red huckleberry is a graceful Northwest native shrub with bright green, finely branched stems, delicate spring flowers, and tart, salmon-red berries. Its long bloom period from April through June provides seasonal interest, while the fruit attracts birds, mammals, and other wildlife.
The berries are widely used in jams, juices, and baked goods, and many Pacific Northwest tribes have long gathered them for food, including jams and jellies. In the landscape, this shrub fits naturally into woodland gardens, native plantings, and wildlife areas. It can also form informal hedgerows or thickets, helping stabilize soil and mitigate erosion.

Planting & Care
1. Planting: Planting: Plant or repot within 4 weeks of arrival. Plant in full sun for best berry development and harvest, though huckleberries can handle part shade. Soil must be well draining and acidic. Test soil pH before planting and amend with sulphur if the pH is above 5.0. Plant at the original soil level, and add a layer of leaf mulch or fine bark while keeping it away from the stems.
2. Watering: Water deeply and regularly during the first two growing seasons. Once established, maintain even moisture during dry periods, especially while the shrub is flowering and developing fruit. Plants in full sun will need consistent moisture.
3. Pruning: Prune lightly in late winter or after fruiting to remove dead, damaged, or crossing branches. Avoid heavy pruning, as the shrub’s naturally open form is part of its appeal.
4. Fertilizing: Fertilize sparingly in early spring only if growth is weak. Use a low-dose fertilizer formulated for acid-loving plants, and avoid lime or high-phosphorus products.
