Planting & Care

1. Planting: Plant or repot within 4 weeks of arrival. Remove the stake and ties at planting, as these are only for shipping. Select a location that receives full sun and has well-draining soil. Dig a hole that is slightly larger than the root ball, place the plant in the hole, and backfill with soil. Water thoroughly after planting.

2. Watering: Keep the soil consistently moist but not soggy during the growing season. Water deeply about once a week, allowing the top inch of soil to dry out between watering. Reduce watering in the fall and winter months when the plant goes dormant.

3. Pruning: Prune the plant in late winter or early spring to promote bushier growth. Remove any dead or weak branches to improve air circulation and shape. Be careful not to over-prune, as it can reduce flowering.

4. Fertilizing: During the growing season, use a balanced, slow-release fertilizer every six to eight weeks to encourage healthy growth and vibrant blooms. Follow package instructions for application rates and avoid fertilizing in the fall or winter months.

5. Container Growth: In zones that experience frost and freeze, plumerias can be grown in containers and overwintered indoors. Choose a container with drainage holes and use a light, fast draining potting mix with perlite. Place outdoors in full sun during the growing season and watering when the top 2” are dry. Repot every few years. Fertilize monthly during the growing season and stop in fall. Once temperatures are in the low 50s, bring plants indoors to a cool, dry place like a garage or basement that stays between 50-60 F, which allows the plant to go dormant. If placing in a room where temperatures are above 50 F, the plant will naturally drop some leaves and enter into semi-dormancy. Plumeria rubra is a deciduous type of plumeria.
