If messy berries have previously deterred you from planting a serviceberry, the Rainbow Pillar® is an ideal solution, as only 10% of its blossoms yield mature fruit. For more berries, simply plant with another type of serviceberry. In addition to its aesthetic appeal, the Rainbow Pillar® is resistant to powdery mildew and rust, meaning you can enjoy its beauty without the worry of common plant diseases. Its upright, pillar-like form adds vertical interest, making it a versatile choice for borders, small gardens, or even as a street tree. Planting this tree will not only brighten your outdoor space but also support local wildlife, creating a harmonious environment.
Planting & Care
1. Planting: Plant or repot within 4 weeks of arrival. Remove the stake and ties at planting, as these are only for shipping. Choose a location with well-draining soil and partial to full sun for the best growth. In warmer climates, provide afternoon shade. Dig a hole twice as wide as the root ball and just as deep, then backfill gently, ensuring the soil is settled around the roots. Spread a 3” settled layer of mulch three feet around the tree, pulling it back a few inches from the trunk.
2. Watering: Water your serviceberry deeply twice a week during the first growing season to help establish a strong root system. After that, it can thrive with occasional watering during dry spells. Serviceberries are tolerant of wet soils.
3. Pruning: Prune as needed to shape the tree and remove any dead or damaged branches. The best time to prune is in late winter or early spring before new growth begins. This helps maintain a neat appearance and encourages healthy growth.
4. Fertilizing: Fertilize in early spring with a balanced, slow-release fertilizer to promote healthy growth and vibrant blooms. Follow the manufacturer's instructions for the appropriate amount to use.
