Planting & Care
1. Planting: Plant or repot within 4 weeks of arrival. Dig a hole that is twice as wide as the root ball but no deeper. Place the shrub so that the top of the root ball is level with the soil surface, and backfill it carefully to eliminate air pockets. Spread a 3” thick layer of mulch three feet around the tree, pulling the mulch back a few inches from the trunk. Mulching helps conserve moisture, insulates roots, and suppresses weeds.
2. Watering: Water the shrub deeply after planting and make sure to keep the soil consistently moist for the first few months. Once established, it requires average watering but make sure it doesn't dry out completely, especially during dry spells.
3. Pruning: Pruning is generally not necessary, however shearing to shape the tree can be done at the beginning of the growing season. Dead wood can be pruned out anytime of the year.
4. Fertilizing: An application of balanced fertilizer in early spring will encourage healthy growth. Avoid fertilizing late in the growing season to prevent new growth from becoming susceptible to winter damage.
