Planting & Care
1. Planting: Plant or repot within 4 weeks of arrival. Choose a well-draining location that receives full sun. Avoid planting in low spots, heavy clay, or areas with standing water, as butterfly bushes are sensitive to root rot. Dig a hole twice the width of the root ball and just as deep. Place the shrub in the center of the hole, backfill with soil, and water thoroughly to remove air pockets.
2. Watering: Keep the soil evenly moist, especially during the first growing season. Once established, the Pugster Pinker is somewhat drought-tolerant but will benefit from regular watering during dry spells for optimal blooming.
3. Pruning: Prune in spring, as new growth emerges. Cut stems back by ½ to ⅓, cutting just above a bud. Remove dead or damaged wood throughout the season. Butterfly bush is late to emerge from dormancy.
4. Fertilizing: Fertilize in early spring with a balanced, slow-release fertilizer to support healthy growth throughout the blooming season. Avoid over-fertilizing, as this can lead to excessive foliage at the expense of flowers.
