Planting & Care
1. Planting: Plant or repot within 4 weeks of arrival. Choose a location with at least 6–8 hours of direct sunlight and fertile, well-drained soil. Plant deeply, covering part of the stem to encourage additional roots. Space plants 24–36 inches apart and provide a cage, trellis, or sturdy stake.
2. Watering: Water deeply and consistently, keeping the soil evenly moist but not soggy. Aim water at the base of the plant to keep foliage dry. Container-grown plants may need daily watering during hot weather.
3. Pruning: Remove yellowing or damaged lower leaves and any foliage touching the soil. Lightly thin crowded growth if needed for better airflow, but avoid heavy pruning, which can reduce the harvest. Tie stems loosely to their support as they grow.
4. Fertilizing: Mix compost or a slow-release vegetable fertilizer into the soil at planting. Once flowers and fruit begin forming, use a tomato fertilizer with moderate nitrogen according to label directions. Avoid excess nitrogen, which encourages leafy growth at the expense of fruit production.
