Planting & Care
1. Planting: Plant or repot within 4 weeks of arrival. To ensure your Perfecto Mundo® thrives, provide well-draining, acidic soil. While azaleas can handle full sun in cooler regions, they prefer partial sun to dappled shade in warmer zones. Dig a hole twice the width of the root ball, gently loosen the roots, and position the shrub so the top of the root ball is level with the soil surface. Fill in around the roots with soil, spread a layer of mulch around the plant, and water thoroughly.
2. Watering: Water the shrub consistently during its first growing season to help establish a strong root system. Once established, it prefers to be on the drier side, so only water when the top inch of soil feels dry. Be cautious of overwatering, as this can lead to root rot.
3. Pruning: Prune immediately after spring flowering finishes. Focus on shaping the plant and removing spent blooms to encourage new growth and promote a mid-summer rebloom.
4. Fertilizing: Fertilize once in early spring using a fertilizer for acid-loving plants or a rose fertilizer. Avoid over-fertilizing, as this can lead to excessive foliage growth at the expense of flowers.
5. Winterizing: Azaleas are sensitive to cold damage in Zone 5. Apply a thick layer of mulch in fall to insulate the roots, and wrap plants in burlap to help prevent winter burn.
