A stunning display of bright red-orange berries in winter
This adaptable female shrub puts on a dazzling show in the colder months, boasting an abundant crop of large, bright red-orange berries that will brighten your winter landscape. The leaves of this shrub tend to drop earlier than others, allowing for an unobstructed view of the berries. For those looking to enhance the berry production, pairing it with the male Mr. Poppins holly offers the necessary pollination it needs to thrive.
Perfect for holiday porch pot displays or as a standalone feature in your garden, this shrub combines beauty and practicality. Its visual appeal makes it a delightful addition to any landscape while also serving as a food source for local birds during the cold season. If you're looking to add some vibrant color to your yard or simply want a unique plant to create seasonal arrangements, this shrub is an excellent choice.
Planting & Care
1. Planting: Plant or repot within 4 weeks of arrival. Select a spot with well-drained, acidic soil and full to partial sun for the best results. Winterberry holly can be planted in full shade but berry production will be reduced. Dig a hole twice the width of the root ball and the same depth; place the tree in the hole, ensuring that the top of the root ball is level with the soil surface. Spread a 3” layer of mulch three feet around the tree.
2. Watering: Establish a consistent watering routine, ensuring the soil remains moist but not soggy. Water regularly, especially during dry spells. Winterberry holly is drought tolerant but will produce the most berries in well watered soils.
3. Pruning: Light pruning can be done in late winter to maintain shape and encourage new growth. Remove any dead or damaged branches as needed.
4. Fertilizing: Use a balanced fertilizer for acid loving plants in early spring to promote healthy growth and an abundant berry crop. Follow package instructions for application rates.
