A Stunning Display of Fruity-Scented Blooms Across Spring and Summer
Combining the finest traits of native West Coast and Chinese sweet shrubs, the Aphrodite Sweetshrub is known for its cupped, deep red, magnolia-like blossoms and large, glossy green leaves resting on arching stems. This cultivar exhibits unique characteristics depending on where it is grown: in cooler climates, it can bloom continuously all summer long, whereas warmer zones typically experience a 6 to 8 week bloom period spanning spring and early summer. Its distinct fruity fragrance also varies based on the age of the blossom and the individual flower, with some being richly aromatic and others offering little to no scent at all.
The mature size of the plant can vary significantly. While often maintained as a 6-to-8-foot shrub, given ample space to grow and left unpruned, it can reach 12 to 15 feet—with some specimens growing up to 25 feet tall. Featuring long-lasting deep red flowers, versatile size, and a captivating aroma, this extraordinary plant is sure to become a standout favorite in your garden.
Planting & Care
1. Planting: Plant or repot within 4 weeks of arrival. Choose a location with well-drained soil. In warmer climates, sweetshrub appreciates afternoon shade, while cooler climates can plant in full sun. Dig a hole that is twice as wide as the root ball and slightly shallower than its height. Place the plant in the center of the hole so that the top of the rootball is level with the soil line. Backfill with soil and spread a 3" layer of mulch three feet around the tree, pulling the mulch back a few inches from the base.
2. Watering: During the first growing season, water regularly to establish a strong root system. Once established, the Aphrodite Shrub prefers consistently moist soil and will need regular watering.
3. Pruning: Prune immediately after flowering to remove crossing branches, dead wood, or to shape the plant.
4. Fertilizing: Apply a balanced, slow-release fertilizer in the spring as growth begins.
