Planting & Care
1. Planting: Crimson Maples prefer well-drained areas in Western and Northern parts of the US and can struggle in the South. Once established, it tolerates drought with little harm although infrequent, deep irrigation will help retain more foliage in extremely dry periods, especially in regions with hot summers. Select a spot where the tree is in full to partial sun exposure (4 to 8 hours of sunlight per day).
From there, remove the ties and stake, as these are only for transit. Dig a hole for your Crimson Sentry Maple that’s 2 to 3 times the width of your tree’s root ball and equal depth. Place your tree in the planting hole, keeping the top of the root ball even with the ground. Backfill with soil, then spread a 3” layer of mulch three feet around the tree. Water deeply.
2. Watering: During its formative years, your Crimson Sentry Maple will require weekly watering. Even as it matures, your tree will still need plenty of water during the summer months. Be sure to water correctly by placing a slow dripping hose at the tree’s base. Light green leaves are a sign of over-watering, while drooping leaves signify both over-watering and under-watering.
3. Fertilizing: Fertilize in early spring with a balanced fertilizer like a 10-10-10.
4. Pruning: Prune in winter, as all other seasons may result in maples bleeding sap. Remove any dead or crossing wood, then cut back competing leaders by about 12”. Prune regularly for the first 10 years to develop good structure and to remove the lowest branches, depending on how much clearance for pedestrians, cars, or mowers are needed under the tree.
