Self-fertile fruit for juice, jelly and wine
Noble is the go-to black muscadine for making rich juice, flavorful jelly and homemade wine. Its productive vines bear clusters of thick-skinned grapes, and because it is self-fertile, a single vine can produce fruit on its own.
This dependable vine also pollinates female muscadines such as Fry and Jumbo. Naturally disease-resistant and well suited to hot, humid summers, it brings both an abundant harvest and leafy coverage to a sunny arbor, fence or sturdy trellis.
Planting & Care
1. Planting: Plant or repot within 4 weeks of arrival. Choose a location with full sun, good air circulation and well-drained, slightly acidic soil. Provide a strong trellis, arbor or wire support, and allow about 10–20 feet between vines.
2. Watering: Water deeply after planting and regularly during the first growing season, keeping the soil evenly moist but not soggy. Established vines are fairly drought-tolerant but benefit from water during prolonged dry periods and fruit development.
3. Pruning: Prune while the vine is dormant in late winter. Maintain a main trunk and permanent cordons, then cut back the previous season’s growth to short fruiting spurs with two to four buds. Remove weak, crowded or damaged growth.
4. Fertilizing: Apply a balanced fertilizer in spring as new growth begins, following package directions. A second light feeding may be used in early summer if growth is weak. Avoid overfertilizing, which can encourage excessive foliage at the expense of fruit.
