Sweet-tart fruit with lasting wildlife value

The Native Red Mulberry Tree is a true American native, valued for its sweet-tart berries that ripen from red to dark purple. Enjoy the fruit fresh or use it in jams and pies, while songbirds and other backyard wildlife share in the harvest.

Cold hardy in zones 4–9, this long-lived, disease-resistant tree develops into a dependable shade and food source. Plant it in a roomy location where its canopy can spread, ideally away from patios and walkways where fallen berries may stain.

Planting & Care

1. Planting: Plant or repot within 4 weeks of arrival. Remove the stake and ties at planting, as these are only for shipping. Choose a site in full sun to partial shade with well-drained soil and enough room for the tree’s mature canopy. Dig a hole as deep as the root ball and about twice as wide, keeping the root flare level with the surrounding soil.

2. Watering: Water deeply after planting and regularly during the first growing season, allowing the upper soil to dry slightly between waterings. Once established, the tree tolerates brief dry periods but benefits from supplemental water during prolonged drought.

3. Pruning: Prune in late winter while the tree is dormant. Remove dead, damaged or crossing branches and lightly shape the canopy as needed. Avoid unnecessary heavy pruning.

4. Fertilizing: Fertilizer is usually unnecessary in average garden soil. If growth is weak or a soil test indicates a need, apply a balanced, slow-release fertilizer in early spring, following label directions.
