Fast growth with fragrant, early blooms
Moonglow® is a fast-growing sweetbay magnolia selected and named by Earl Cully. Its precocious flowering habit means it can reach 5 feet and begin blooming within two to three years, making it a rewarding choice for adding height, structure, and seasonal interest to the landscape.
Lemon-fragrant, creamy white flowers appear over an extended period in late spring, complemented by attractive foliage and a tidy tree form. Surprisingly hardy to -33°F, this adaptable cultivar is also a recipient of the Pennsylvania Horticultural Society Gold Medal.
Planting & Care
1. Planting: Plant or repot within 4 weeks of arrival. Choose a site in full sun to partial shade with moist, acidic, well-drained soil. Dig a hole as deep as the root ball and about twice as wide, keeping the top of the root ball level with the surrounding soil. Mulch lightly without covering the trunk.
2. Watering: Water deeply after planting and regularly during the first growing season. Keep the soil consistently moist but not waterlogged. Established plants tolerate brief dry periods but perform best when moisture remains even.
3. Pruning: Little pruning is needed. Remove dead, damaged, or crossing branches after flowering, and prune lightly to maintain the desired tree form. Avoid heavy pruning, which may reduce the following season’s blooms.
4. Fertilizing: Apply a slow-release fertilizer formulated for acid-loving trees in early spring if growth is weak or the soil is nutrient-poor. Avoid overfertilizing, as excess nitrogen can encourage leafy growth at the expense of flowers.
