Planting & Care
1. Planting: Plant or repot within 4 weeks of arrival. Remove the stake and ties at planting, as these are only for shipping. Choose a spot with well-draining soil. Japanese maples can handle more sun in cooler climates, but in warm climates, they must have morning sun and afternoon shade, otherwise their leaves will scorch. Dig a hole twice as wide as the root ball and equally deep. Place the tree in the hole, backfill with soil, and spread a 3” layer of mulch three feet around the tree. Water thoroughly.
2. Watering: Keep the soil consistently moist but not soggy during the first growing season. Once established, this tree benefits from regular watering during prolonged dry spells.
3. Pruning: Prune in late winter or early spring before new growth begins. Remove any dead or crossing branches to promote airflow and reduce disease risk, shaping the tree to maintain its elegant form.
4. Fertilizing: Use a balanced, slow-release fertilizer in early spring to provide essential nutrients. Avoid over-fertilizing, as excessive nitrogen can lead to weak growth.
