Velvety bicolor blooms for late-season color

Showy purple-and-white flower spikes rise above soft, silvery-green foliage, bringing rich color and texture to borders, cottage gardens, and sunny foundation beds. The blooms are especially valuable from late summer into fall, when they attract butterflies and hummingbirds.

Heat and drought tolerant once established, and naturally resistant to deer and rabbits, this shrub is a practical choice for water-wise landscapes. Its tidy care needs and long flowering season make it a low-maintenance way to add movement, pollinator activity, and dependable seasonal interest.

Planting & Care

1. Planting: Plant or repot within 4 weeks of arrival. Choose a location with full sun and well-drained soil. Space plants 3–4 feet apart to provide room for their mature, arching growth.

2. Watering: Water deeply and regularly during the first growing season. Once established, water when the soil is dry several inches down; avoid consistently wet or poorly drained conditions.

3. Pruning: Cut back old or frost-damaged growth in late winter or early spring. Light trimming during the growing season can encourage fuller growth, but avoid heavy pruning once flower buds begin forming.

4. Fertilizing: Apply a balanced, slow-release fertilizer in spring if growth is weak or soil is poor. Rich soil and frequent feeding are unnecessary and may produce excessive foliage with fewer flowers.
