Compact color for the late-season garden
This bushy, compact perennial is covered with vibrant carmine-red flowers from late summer through fall. Its tidy habit fits easily into borders, cottage gardens, and smaller spaces without overwhelming nearby plants.
Plant it to extend garden color as many summer bloomers begin to fade. It grows and flowers best in full sun, adding rich color while providing a valuable late-season nectar source for bees and butterflies.
Planting & Care
1. Planting: Plant or repot within 4 weeks of arrival. Choose a location with full sun and well-drained soil. Dig a hole about twice as wide as the root ball, position the crown level with the soil, backfill, and water thoroughly.
2. Watering: Water regularly during the first growing season to establish strong roots. Once established, water when the top inch of soil feels dry, taking care not to leave the soil soggy.
3. Pruning: Pinch back the stems in late spring to encourage fuller growth if desired. After flowering, remove spent blooms for a tidier appearance, or leave them for winter interest and cut stems back in early spring.
4. Fertilizing: Apply a light layer of compost or a balanced, slow-release fertilizer in spring. Avoid excessive fertilizer, which can lead to weak, floppy growth.
