Slender, glossy fruits for summer harvests

Japanese eggplant produces elongated, glossy fruits with tender skin and a mild flavor that works well for grilling, roasting, and stir-fries. Harvest the fruits when they reach 8–10 inches long and 1.5–2.5 inches in diameter for the best texture and flavor.

This warm-season vegetable fits easily into sunny garden beds, raised beds, or large containers. Its upright growth and attractive purple fruits add color to edible landscapes while providing a steady harvest through summer with regular picking. This product is Certified Organic by Clemson University.

Pollination Info

Japanese Eggplant Plant - USDA Organic Pollination

Japanese Eggplant Plant - USDA Organics are self-fertile. You will get fruit with only one plant. However, adding an additional Japanese Eggplant Plant - USDA Organic will drastically increase the size of your crop.

Planting & Care

1. Planting: Plant or repot within 4 weeks of arrival. Place in full sun after the danger of frost has passed and nighttime temperatures remain above 50°F. Use fertile, well-draining soil and allow about 18–24 inches between plants. Add a stake or cage early to support fruit-laden stems.

2. Watering: Water deeply and consistently, providing about 1–2 inches per week. Keep the soil evenly moist but not soggy, and apply mulch to help retain moisture and limit weeds.

3. Pruning: Minimal pruning is needed. Remove yellowing or damaged leaves and any growth touching the soil. Harvest regularly with clean pruners to encourage continued fruit production.

4. Fertilizing: Mix compost or a balanced fertilizer into the soil at planting. Once flowering begins, feed every 3–4 weeks with a vegetable fertilizer that is not overly high in nitrogen.
