Graceful seed heads for shady spaces
This Eastern native perennial grass brings texture and movement to woodland gardens, shaded borders, and naturalized areas. Its arching green foliage supports distinctive, flat seed heads that shift from green to bronze as they mature, providing interest from summer into fall.
It prefers moist areas but tolerates poor soil, making it useful for erosion control and revegetation projects. The dried seed heads work well in flower arrangements. Allow room for it to spread, as it can reseed prolifically; remove seed heads before they mature if you want to limit new seedlings.
Planting & Care
1. Planting: Plant or repot within 4 weeks of arrival. Choose a site with partial to full shade and moist, well-drained soil. Space plants 2 to 3 feet apart and consider removing mature seed heads to control reseeding.
2. Watering: Water regularly during the first growing season to establish a strong root system. Once established, keep the soil consistently moist, though the plant can tolerate brief dry periods.
3. Pruning: Cut old foliage back to a few inches above the ground in late winter or early spring. Remove seed heads in fall if you want to prevent prolific self-seeding.
4. Fertilizing: Fertilizer is usually unnecessary, especially in average or naturally rich soil. If growth is weak, apply a light layer of compost in spring rather than a high-nitrogen fertilizer.
