The Hall's Hardy Almond Tree is a remarkable addition to the garden, especially for those living in regions where almonds have proven hard to grow. As a cross between an almond and a peach, this variety has both improved cold hardiness and the ability to bloom late in the season, skipping over frosts that would otherwise damage the flowers. Hall's Hardy Almond Trees are self-fertile. You will get fruit with only one plant. However, adding an additional Hall's Hardy Almond Tree will drastically increase the size of your crop.
Planting & Care
1. Planting: Plant or repot within 4 weeks of arrival. Remove the stake and ties at planting, as these are only for shipping. Choose a sunny spot with well-draining soil to ensure healthy growth. Dig a hole wide and deep enough to accommodate the root ball, and plant at the same depth as it was in the nursery. Backfill with soil and spread mulch three feet around the tree. Water thoroughly after planting.
2. Watering: Water regularly during establishment, about 3 to 5 gallons per week or when the top 2” of soil are dry. Be cautious not to overwater, as this can lead to root rot.
3. Pruning: To maintain a healthy shape and promote growth, prune the tree in late winter or early spring before new growth begins. Remove any dead or damaged branches, as well as crossing wood. Avoid over pruning, as this can limit fruiting wood and reduce yield. Prune the first few years for structure and canopy development to be able to hold large fruit yields.
4. Fertilizing: Conduct a soil test prior to planting and fertilize in early spring based on soil test guidance.
