A hard-to-find native with delicious rewards

This unique, hard-to-find native edible produces flavorful berries that can be enjoyed fresh or used in jams, pies, and sauces. Its lobed green foliage and arching branches create a naturally full, informal look, while small spring flowers support visiting pollinators.

A compact size makes this deciduous shrub useful in edible gardens, mixed borders, and wildlife-friendly plantings. It grows best with good airflow and consistent moisture, rewarding a little seasonal care with an attractive landscape plant and a homegrown harvest.

Planting & Care

1. Planting: Plant or repot within 4 weeks of arrival. Choose a location with full sun to partial shade and moist, well-drained soil. Provide afternoon shade in hot climates and allow room around the shrub for airflow. Plant with the root crown level with the surrounding soil, then water thoroughly and add a layer of mulch.

2. Watering: Water deeply and regularly during the first growing season. Once established, keep the soil evenly moist, especially while the shrub is flowering and developing fruit. Avoid soggy conditions and prolonged drought.

3. Pruning: Prune in late winter or early spring before new growth begins. Remove dead, damaged, or crossing branches, then thin some of the oldest stems at ground level to improve airflow and encourage productive new growth.

4. Fertilizing: Apply compost or a balanced, slow-release fertilizer in early spring. Avoid excessive nitrogen, which can promote leafy growth at the expense of flowers and fruit.
