Very large bronze fruit with benchmark flavor
Fry Bronze Muscadine Vine produces very large, sweet bronze muscadines prized for fresh eating. Considered the University of Georgia's quality benchmark for fresh-eating bronze varieties, its fruit offers excellent size, flavor, and an appealing golden-bronze color. With a long harvest season, Fry begins ripening in August and continues through September.
Muscadines grow best on a trellis for easy pruning and harvesting. Give them plenty of sunshine and airflow, and they'll thrive in hot, humid climates. Fry Bronze is a female vine and requires a nearby self-fertile muscadine variety, such as Carlos, Noble, or Southern Home, for pollination and fruit production.
Planting & Care
1. Planting: Plant or repot within 4 weeks of arrival. Choose a location with full sun, good air circulation, and well-drained, slightly acidic soil. Provide a strong trellis, arbor, or wire support, allowing approximately 15–20 feet of space for the vine to spread. Plant within 50 feet of a self-fertile muscadine such as Carlos to ensure pollination.
2. Watering: Water deeply after planting and keep the soil evenly moist during the first growing season. Once established, muscadines tolerate short dry periods, but regular watering during flowering and fruit development supports larger, higher-quality grapes. Avoid consistently soggy soil.
3. Pruning: Prune annually in late winter while the vine is dormant. Remove excess growth and shorten the previous season’s shoots to fruiting spurs with two to four buds. Keep the main trunk and permanent arms well defined, and remove shoots that emerge from the base.
4. Fertilizing: Apply a balanced fertilizer after new growth begins in spring, following label rates for the vine’s age and size. Spread it evenly over the root zone rather than against the trunk. A soil test can help identify nutrient needs and prevent overfertilizing, which may encourage leaves at the expense of fruit.
