This handsome evergreen shrub provides four-season interest with glossy green leaves that remain attractive through winter. Bronze to red new growth brightens spring, followed by small pinkish-white flowers that provide nectar for hummingbirds and butterflies. Dark purple berries ripen in late summer and are enjoyed by birds.
The edible berries have a sweet, distinctive flavor associated with the Pacific Northwest. With its dense growth and tolerance for partial shade, this shrub works well in woodland gardens, native plantings, informal hedges, and wildlife-friendly landscapes.

Planting & Care

3. Pruning: Prune lightly in late winter or after fruiting to remove damaged, crossing, or crowded branches. Older shrubs can be selectively thinned to encourage fresh growth. Avoid heavy shearing if you want a natural form and a good berry crop.
4. Fertilizing: Apply a light dose of fertilizer formulated for acid-loving plants in early spring. Avoid overfertilizing, which can promote excessive leafy growth at the expense of flowers and berries.
