Beyond its aesthetic qualities, planting this maple also supports local ecosystems by providing shelter and food for various wildlife. Its slow growth makes it a perfect choice for those seeking a long-lasting addition to their garden, encouraging thoughtful planning and care as you nurture it from a sapling to maturity. With the right attention, this tree can become an admired centerpiece, creating a serene atmosphere in your yard.
Planting & Care
1. Planting: Plant or repot within 4 weeks of arrival. Remove the stake and ties at planting, as these are only for shipping. Choose a location with full sun to partial shade and ensure well-drained, acidic soil for optimal growth. Dig a hole that is twice as wide and the same depth as the root ball, gently backfilling with native soil. Spread a 3” layer of mulch three feet around the tree, pulling the mulch back a few inches from the base.
2. Watering: Regular watering is essential, especially during dry spells. During establishment, water every few days or whenever the top 2” of soil are dry. After establishment, water deeply once a week, adjusting for climate and soil type.
3. Pruning: Prune in winter, as all other seasons may result in maples bleeding sap. Remove any dead or crossing wood, then cut back competing leaders by about 12”. Prune regularly for the first 10 years to develop good structure and to remove the lowest branches, depending on how much clearance for pedestrians, cars, or mowers are needed under the tree.
4. Fertilizing: Fertilize once a year in early spring with a balanced, slow-release fertilizer. Follow the manufacturer's guidelines to avoid over-fertilization which can harm the tree.
