Late-season fruit when wildlife needs it most

This grafted female American persimmon was selected for heavy annual crops of sweet, nutty fruit measuring 1.25 to 1.5 inches. It begins bearing in just 2 to 3 years, providing results sooner than many seed-grown persimmons.

Fruit drops from October through December, when other food sources are fading. This timing makes the tree especially useful for wildlife habitat and hunting land, while its natural form and seasonal interest also fit well in larger yards and informal landscapes.

Planting & Care

1. Planting: Plant or repot within 4 weeks of arrival. Remove the stake and ties at planting, as these are only for shipping. Choose a site in full sun with well-drained soil and enough room for the tree’s mature canopy. Dig a hole as deep as the root ball and about twice as wide, keeping the graft union above the soil line.

2. Watering: Water deeply after planting and regularly during the first growing season. Aim for consistently moist, but not waterlogged, soil while roots establish. Mature trees tolerate some dryness, though watering during extended drought can support fruit development.

3. Pruning: Prune in late winter while the tree is dormant. Remove dead, damaged, crossing, or crowded branches, and maintain a balanced framework. Avoid heavy pruning, which can reduce flowering and fruit production.

4. Fertilizing: Apply a light dose of balanced, slow-release fertilizer in early spring if growth is weak or the soil is poor. Avoid overfertilizing, especially with high-nitrogen products, as excessive leafy growth may reduce fruiting.
