Why Arabica Coffee Plants

Grow your own coffee from a plant you can keep right in your home: harvest the cherries as they ripen, dry the beans in your oven or a home roaster, then grind and brew once they've cooled. It's a genuinely rare houseplant experience — few plants let you go from garden to cup.

This evergreen produces fragrant, star-shaped white flowers followed by cherries that shift through a striking color sequence as they ripen — green to yellow, then orange, then deep red — set against glossy, dark green foliage. Each cherry holds two coffee beans, and a mature plant can produce hundreds of them per season.

Give your Arabica Coffee Plant the right light for where it's growing. Indoors, it prefers indirect light — an east-facing window works well. Outdoors, it can handle a few hours of gentle morning sun, but keep it out of harsh afternoon exposure. It adapts easily to container growing on a patio or in a bright room year-round. If you're in a colder climate, bring it inside before temperatures drop; this is a warmth-loving tropical plant at heart, so it won't tolerate the kind of exposure a hardier landscape tree would.

One genuine perk: the same caffeine that ends up in your cup also works as the plant's natural defense against many common pests and diseases, so it tends to run cleaner than a lot of other houseplants.

Why Trees.com?

Your Coffee Plant leaves our nursery well-rooted and more mature than what you'd typically find elsewhere, so it settles into your home ready to keep growing rather than needing time to establish first.

Every plant we ship is backed by our Alive & Thrive Guarantee™, and our Plant Experts are ready to help with questions about watering, light, or spotting the difference between an under- and overwatered plant as it settles in.

Pollination Info

Arabica Coffee Plant Pollination

Arabica Coffee Plants are self-fertile. You will get fruit with only one plant. However, adding an additional Arabica Coffee Plant will drastically increase the size of your crop.

Planting & Care

1. Planting: For the best results, use well-draining soil, and give your plant the right light for its location: indoors, an east-facing window is ideal; outdoors, a spot with a few hours of gentle morning sun works well.

Select a pot that's about twice the size of your plant's shipped container, use organic soil, and place your plant in its pot. Keep the humidity up around the coffee plant by setting it on a water-filled pebble tray in its early stages. A light misting with a water bottle in the evenings is great for a more mature plant.

Note: This product grows best in well-draining soil. When you receive your plant, you may notice small, white beads or rocks in the soil - this medium is added to increase drainage and keep your plant happy and healthy!

2. Watering: Water once weekly with warm water until it comes out of the bottom of your pot. If you're not sure when to water, simply check the surrounding soil about 2 inches down.

Trees.com Tip: If the leaves curl upwards, or seem crispy and dry, this can be a sign of under-watering. Drooping leaves that appear too heavy for the plant to hold up that turn a shade of dark brown or black indicate overwatering.

3. Fertilizing: Potted plants need to be fertilized every two weeks during the growing season with a low concentration of fertilizer. The best results come from using a formula like 10-10-10 or an orchid fertilizer.

4. Pruning: Remove any low-growing branches or leaves near the base with a sterilized cutting tool.

5. Harvesting: The cherries of your Arabica coffee plant take roughly nine months to fully ripen. The best way to harvest is by selective picking, where you select the best, ripest cherries for harvesting by hand. Coffee cherries don't mature all at the same time so it's necessary to pick them over the course of several days to remove your ripened cherries. The cherries are considered ripe when their skin fully turns red.

Squeeze the cherries in order to get the seeds or coffee beans out.
