Large, easy-shelling nuts with excellent kernel color

The Choctaw Pecan Tree produces large nuts with shells that open easily and reveal plump kernels with an appealing golden color. Its flavorful harvest is well suited for fresh eating, baking, and storing.

This vigorous deciduous tree also develops a broad canopy that provides welcome summer shade. Give it plenty of room in a sunny landscape, and plant a compatible Type I pecan nearby to support reliable pollination and better nut production.

Pollination Info

Choctaw Pecan Tree Pollination

Choctaw Pecan Trees are self-fertile. You will get fruit with only one plant. However, adding an additional Choctaw Pecan Tree will drastically increase the size of your crop.

Planting & Care

1. Planting: Plant or repot within 4 weeks of arrival. Remove the stake and ties at planting, as these are only for shipping. Choose a location with full sun, deep well-drained soil, and ample space for the mature canopy. Plant at the same depth it was growing in the container, and add a compatible Type I pecan nearby for cross-pollination.

2. Watering: Water deeply after planting and keep the soil evenly moist during the first growing season. Once established, water during extended dry periods, especially while nuts are developing, but avoid consistently soggy soil.

3. Pruning: Prune in late winter while the tree is dormant. Remove dead, damaged, or crossing branches and maintain a strong central leader when the tree is young. Avoid heavy pruning, which can reduce vigor and future harvests.

4. Fertilizing: Wait until new growth begins before applying fertilizer. Use a balanced tree fertilizer according to soil-test results and local guidance, keeping it away from the trunk. Pecans may also need zinc in deficient soils.
