Showy blue blooms through every season
Cape plumbago is a Texas Superstar® Plant valued for its clusters of showy blue flowers. In mild, frost-free climates, it can bloom year-round, bringing dependable color to borders, foundation beds and large containers. The flowers attract butterflies and hummingbirds, while the foliage is generally deer resistant.
This hardy, drought-resistant shrub handles Texas heat well once established and grows in sun or partial shade. Its loose, spreading form works well as an informal hedge, accent shrub or colorful backdrop in a pollinator-friendly landscape.
Planting & Care
1. Planting: Plant or repot within 4 weeks of arrival. Choose a location with full sun to partial shade and well-draining soil. Space it where its naturally broad, relaxed growth habit has room to develop.
2. Watering: Water deeply and regularly during the first growing season. Once established, it is drought resistant, though occasional deep watering during prolonged dry periods supports better flowering.
3. Pruning: Prune in late winter or early spring to remove cold-damaged growth and maintain the desired shape. Light trimming during the growing season can encourage fuller growth and additional blooms.
4. Fertilizing: Apply a balanced, slow-release fertilizer in spring. Avoid overfertilizing, which may encourage excessive leafy growth at the expense of flowers.
