Stunning dark foliage that transforms your landscape
If you're looking to add a striking visual element to your garden, consider a vine maple that captivates with its unique color journey. The foliage of this tree begins its life as a vibrant burgundy and darkens gracefully throughout the summer, often reaching a near-black hue by the season's end. It thrives best in full to part sun, where the brilliant colors are truly brought to life. Beyond its stunning appearance, its shrubby growth habit can reach heights of 6 feet, making it an impressive yet manageable addition to both large and small landscapes.
Considered one of the best native plants for the Pacific Northwest, this maple not only enhances the visual appeal of your yard but also offers a unique backdrop for other plantings. Its dramatic foliage can serve as a focal point or work harmoniously with a variety of other plants and flowers. Whether you’re creating a serene garden retreat or looking to add some flair to your outdoor space, this tree brings a beautiful balance of color and texture.
Planting & Care
1. Planting: Plant or repot within 4 weeks of arrival. Remove the stake and ties at planting, as these are only for shipping. Choose a location that receives full sun to maximize the rich colors of the leaves. In hot, dry sites, plant in half-day sun to prevent leaf scorch. Make sure the soil is well-draining and amend with compost if necessary to promote healthy growth. Vine maples are pH adaptable. Dig a hole that is twice as wide and as deep as the root ball. Place the tree in the hole, backfill with soil, and spread a 3” layer of mulch three feet around the tree. Water thoroughly.
2. Watering: Water regularly during the first growing season to establish a deep, extensive root system. Once established, this tree is moderately drought-tolerant but benefits from supplemental watering during dry periods.
3. Pruning: Little pruning is needed. If desired, prune in summer, otherwise sap will bleed if pruned in winter or spring.
4. Fertilizing: Fertilize in early spring with a balanced, slow-release fertilizer to support growth. Follow the manufacturer's instructions for application rates based on the age and size of your tree.
