Velvety purple blooms with remarkable vigor

Black Gamecock is an excellent introduction to Louisiana irises, which are pollinator-friendly natives throughout parts of the Southeast and Midwest. This top award winner is known for its exceptional vigor, multiplying quickly when grown in consistently moist to boggy soil or shallow water. It brings dependable color and a strong architectural accent to rain gardens, pond edges, and other damp areas.

Huge 4–6-inch flowers open flat, revealing velvety deep purple petals marked by narrow gold signals. Blooming reliably from late spring into midsummer, depending on climate, it typically flowers after Siberian and tall bearded irises have finished for the season.

Planting & Care

1. Planting: Plant or repot within 4 weeks of arrival. Choose full sun to partial shade and consistently moist soil. Set the rhizome just below the soil surface, spacing plants 18–24 inches apart. It can also be planted at a pond edge or in shallow water with the crown near the waterline.

2. Watering: Keep the soil consistently moist and never allow the rhizome to dry out during active growth. Established plants tolerate boggy conditions and shallow standing water.

3. Pruning: Remove spent flower stalks after blooming. Leave healthy foliage in place to support the rhizome, then trim it back once it yellows or dies naturally.

4. Fertilizing: Apply a balanced, slow-release fertilizer in early spring as growth begins. A second light feeding after flowering can support healthy foliage and future blooms.
