Planting & Care

1. Planting: Select a location with full sun to partial shade for your Black Eyed Stella Daylily. For the best flowering performance, choose an area that receives at least 6 to 8 hours of sunlight daily.

To plant in the ground, choose an area with well-drained soil and dig a hole wide enough to accommodate the root ball. Place your Black Eyed Stella Daylily in the hole, keeping the top of the root ball level with the surrounding soil. Backfill with soil and water thoroughly to help establish the roots.

For container planting, select a pot approximately twice the size of the original shipped container. Use a well-draining potting mix and position your Daylily at the same depth it was previously growing. Make sure the container has drainage holes to prevent excess moisture buildup.

2. Watering: Water your Black Eyed Stella Daylily approximately 1-2 times a week, adjusting as needed based on weather and soil conditions. To determine when it's time to water, check the soil about 2 inches below the surface. If it feels dry, water thoroughly. Once established, this hardy perennial can tolerate short periods of drought, though consistent moisture encourages healthy growth and abundant blooms.

3. Fertilizing: Apply a balanced, slow-release fertilizer in early spring as new growth begins to encourage healthy foliage and abundant blooms. Follow the application instructions on the fertilizer packaging and avoid overfertilizing, as excessive nutrients can promote foliage growth at the expense of flowers.

4. Pruning: Remove spent flowers throughout the blooming season to maintain a tidy appearance and encourage continued flowering. Trim away yellowing or damaged leaves as needed, and cut back spent flower stalks to the base of the plant. In late fall or early spring, remove dead foliage to make room for fresh new growth.
