Cold-hardy color for shaded gardens

Beautiful red, anemone-shaped flowers bring rich color to the garden in late winter and spring. Glossy green evergreen foliage grows on well-formed shrubs, providing attractive structure and year-round interest.

Cold tolerant to zone 6, this shrub is a dependable choice for woodland borders, foundation plantings, or sheltered accents. Plant it where it receives protection from harsh winter wind and intense afternoon sun.

Planting & Care

1. Planting: Plant or repot within 4 weeks of arrival. Choose a site with partial shade, protection from winter winds, and moist, well-drained, acidic soil. Set the root ball slightly above the surrounding soil level, and add mulch without piling it against the stem.

2. Watering: Water deeply after planting and regularly during the first growing season. Once established, water during extended dry periods, keeping the soil evenly moist but never waterlogged.

3. Pruning: Prune lightly after flowering to shape the shrub or remove dead, damaged, and crossing branches. Avoid heavy or late-season pruning, which can reduce the following year’s blooms.

4. Fertilizing: Apply a fertilizer formulated for acid-loving plants after flowering in spring, following label directions. Avoid overfertilizing or feeding late in the season, as this may encourage tender growth before winter.
