Hydrangeas earn their reputation from the flowers, and the varieties here cover the full range: mophead blues and pinks, cone-shaped panicle whites, oakleaf types that turn burgundy in fall, and a climbing variety for walls and arbors. If you already know you want one and you're deciding which, the notes below cover the choices that matter most.

How to Choose a Hydrangea Bush for Your Zone And Yard

Start with your growing zone. Our hydrangea plants for sale run from Zone 3 through Zone 9, and the same shrub that thrives outside Minneapolis may struggle through an Atlanta August. Filter by your zone first and the list gets much shorter, much faster.

Sunlight comes next. Most hydrangeas want 4 to 8 hours a day, with morning sun and afternoon shade in warmer climates. Too much shade weakens the stems and gives you fewer blooms, which is the opposite of what you planted it for. Too much afternoon sun can cause leaf burn and stress the plant with scorch.

Best Hydrangeas for Hedges, Borders, and Containers

For a soft privacy screen or a long border, look at the 4- to 8-foot range. Annabelle and Limelight both fill space quickly and hold up as an informal hedge. For a foundation planting or a spot near a walkway, a compact variety like Endless Summer® stays around 3 to 5 feet.

Working with a patio or a small yard? Dwarf types are made for containers and will grow happily in a pot for three to five years. If you want vertical color instead, the hydrangea tree varieties are panicle hydrangeas trained into a single-trunk form.

Picking a Bloom Color You'll Actually Get

Panicle and oakleaf hydrangeas hold their color no matter your soil. Bigleaf types shift with soil pH, so a bigleaf sold as blue can bloom pink in alkaline ground. Sulfur pushes toward blue, lime toward pink. If you'd rather not adjust anything, browse white hydrangeas or pink hydrangea shrubs that bloom true, or the reblooming Endless Summer® collection for flowers on both old and new wood.
